Piercing bumps 101
What is a Piercing Bump?
A Piercing bump is a small lump that can appear after a piercing. They appear as a bump on or near the piercing. They may be red, and itchy and may ooze clear fluid.
Why did I get a piercing bump?
Piercing bumps occur when the body’s immune system responds to a wound and initiates the healing response. This response leads to inflammation, which is what causes a bump. A popular reason for a piercing bump can be friction with the post length. If the labret post is not downsized within the correct length of time it can cause friction within the piercing which in turn causes a piercing bump. Another factor could be the style of jewellery chosen for the location, this can impact how the jewellery moves around in your ear and can cause a piercing bump.
How to treat a Piercing Bump.
Although irritating, piercing bumps are not permanent and will go away in a matter of weeks with proper care. There are a few steps involved in treating a piercing bump. The first is to make sure that the post of your jewellery is the correct size. Most healed piercings require between a 5mm - 6mm post with new piercings needing between an 8mm - 10mm post. Make sure that you check with your piercer for the correct time to downsize as all piercings are different.
The addition of a silicone piercing disc is something that your piercer may decide to put on your piercing at the time or something you can add on afterwards. It can slide onto the back or front of the post/earring and prevents piercing bumps from forming/ developing further. You also need to make sure that you are cleaning the piercing front and back twice per day for 3-4 weeks and then once daily afterwards. This will prevent bacteria from spreading and keep the piercing clean during the healing process. We recommend using the Neilmed Piercing Aftercare Spray.
'True Keloid scarring is an immune response that needs medical attention'
Keloid Scarring
True Keloid scarring is an immune response that needs medical attention. In the case above we would recommend taking the piercing out as the piercing is now on a severe angle that cannot be corrected and keloid scars tend to keep growing without proper treatment. We recommend keeping an eye on your piercing for any signs of these bumps and booking a complimentary follow-up appointment with our expert piercers to discuss the next steps to treat them as soon as possible. As we are not doctors we may refer you to your GP for further treatment.
Keloid Scarring VS Piercing Bump
Many people confuse keloid scars with general piercing bumps. Keloid scars often appear in a purple hue and are soft to the touch. In comparison, piercing bumps are bright red and hard to touch and are often caused as a result of friction from the earring itself.
